After several leaks, Toyota's latest mini MPV has finally been revealed. Making its global debut at the 2021 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) is the all-new Toyota Avanza.
Sporting a sleek new look inside and out, the MPV now sits on a new platform called the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA). This gives the all-new Avanza a unibody, front-wheel-drive layout, ditching the previous generation's body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive platform.
In terms of size, the Avanza is now bigger than its predecessor. It measures 4395mm long, 1730mm wide, and 1665mm tall. It also has a 2750mm wheelbase and a ground clearance of 205mm.
As confirmed by the prior leaks, the MPV gets an exterior makeover that makes it look more upscale. It gets a huge front grille, redesigned headlights (LED on high-grade variants), distinct foglight bezels, defined wheel arches, restyled LED taillights, a new tailgate, and a choice between 15- and 16-inch alloy wheels, depending on the variant.
For those that prefer a more stylish MPV, there's the new Veloz. No longer called the Avanza Veloz, the snazzy people carrier gets its unique look not shared with the regular Avanza. It features a honeycomb-like front grille, distinct LED headlights, sportier bumpers, and exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels.
Back to the regular Avanza, and the interior also received a major overhaul. The dashboard is all-new and with it is the new center stack that houses digital climate control, a 7- or 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and even a wireless charging pad for smartphones. Other upgrades include a tilt/telescopic steering column, an illuminated engine start/stop button, rear USB charging ports, and a 4.2-inch multi-info display.
Want to treat the Avanza as a lounge on wheels? Standard across the range is what Toyota calls the 'Long Sofa Mode'. This seating layout allows the first-row seats to fold back to meet with the second-row seats that fold forward, creating a sofa-like footrest for the third-row seats.
Under the hood, the all-new Avanza is powered by either a 1.3-liter 1NR-VE or the 1.5-liter 2NR-VE four-cylinder Dual VVT-i engines. The former puts out 98 PS with 121 Nm of torque, while the latter generates 106 PS with 137 Nm of torque. With the new front-wheel-drive layout, the four-speed automatic has been replaced in favor of a new CVT with sequential shift. Meanwhile, the five-speed manual transmission has been carried over.
To give the Avanza better ride quality, Toyota claims they installed a new 'Comfortable Suspension' across all variants. Unlike before, the automaker says the new suspension setup will 'deliver more stability by reducing vibration, especially when driving through bumpy roads'.
For the first time, the Avanza is also available with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS). Intelligent safety systems like a pre-collision system, front departure alert, lane-departure assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear-cross traffic alert are just some of the features that come with the safety suite.
Other safety features available across the range include anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, vehicle stability control, hill-start assist, and dual front airbags. On higher-grade models, the MPV comes with rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, and four additional airbags (side and curtain).
With the 2022 Avanza launched in Indonesia, expect other ASEAN markets to get the all-new MPV, including the Philippines. Finger crossed we won't have to wait that long before it arrives in the country.
