If elected VP, Sara Duterte will push for mandatory military service for all Filipinos

MANILA, Philippines — Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio said on Wednesday that, if elected vice president, she would push for mandatory military service for all Filipinos reaching the age of 18 — male or female.

She said she would use the Office of the Vice President to urge the House of Representatives and the Senate of the Philippines to pass such legislation.

“We see this in other countries like South Korea and Israel. It should not just be like ROTC [Reserved Officers’ Training Corp’ where it’s just one subject or one weekend or a month in a year,” Duterte-Carpio, said, speaking in a mix of English and Filipino during the Manila Virtual Caravan.

“Everyone, once your turn 18, once you reach 18 years old, you will be given a subsidy. You will be asked to serve our country under our Armed Forces of the Philippines,” she added.

In 2002, military training was made optional through the National Service Training Program (NSTP) Act of 2001 (Republic Act No. 9163).

Calls to abolish mandatory military training were fueled by the killing of University of Santo Tomas sophomore cadet Mark Welson Chua in 2001 after he exposed corruption in his school’s military training program.

Well, human rights must up ahead.

Nagp prepare nga ba talaga/ o mismong may pakana ang may kasabwat sa china? We have no clues what's goin to happen tho

He he.
Why make it compulsory?
Dapat siguro "Mandatory Government Service for the Youth" yung title. Best option is either "voluntary military service" or community service of "their choice" - everybody happy!

Magkakaroon lang ng additional source of corruption.
South Korea has mandatory service because of their situation with North Korea. Israel has the same reasons.
Both countries are constantly under threat of war and attack and hence must keep their citizens prepared at all times.
The Philippines is not under constant threat of such. And even if we are, the question is - are we capable of defending ourselves? We cannot even end the communist insurgency after so many decades.
The debacle at Mamasapano and Marawi clearly shows where we are.

I agree. Our defence is only locally, within our 1001 islands which still is hard for our military. Pero corruption is always present in all corners. We have to live with that possibility and we have a system that we should trust to control it, or else we're screwed!
Ang sinabi kasi ni Sarah to be exact ay compulsory military service for "all Filipino citizens above 18 yrs old" - not entirely the youth. Not all are fit to take such rugged exercise, yet a great experience for me. But not all will agree.)

Though "voluntary", mas mainam pang i-promote ng malawakan yung Boy Scout and Girl Scout organizations sa public and private schools muna kaysa yan which DEPED is doing. It also has a disadvantage and advantage, but has a positive impact for the next generation of Filipinos.

And you start when they are still young - as a kid!

Ang military service for "armed forces" ay umiikot sa framework ng democracy/freedom, love of country, national security, civilian control, peace and order, rule of law and human rights. Ang gandang pakinggan. Pero kahit pa paikutin nila na isali yung "weapons free" training option for conscientious religious believers like the predominant Catholics (or just the unfit) who are neutral when it comes to wars/conflicts, you can't force everyone to comply easily. And there are still a lot of criticisms that makes Sarah's proposition disagreeable. The least it could achieve is making it "voluntary" to all dahil pansamantalang trabaho din naman yung kanilang "clickbait" na 2nd option (dahil may sweldo/allowance for a few months) to be a "reserved conscript". Gastos lang yan. We need productive projects na umiikot sa "You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Log in or register now." (You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Log in or register now.) in government - not this one na magsasayang lang ng oras, laway at pera sa pagtatalo.

the better question is - what is the purpose of this mandatory service?
what would be the benefit to those who will join?

I think better if the money is spent on much needed military equipment. walang wala tayo when it comes to military hardware yun muna dapat unahin
