Malacanang has response to House Bill seeking to rename NAIA to MIA

The proposal to restore Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to its original name Manila International Airport (MIA) requires "congressional action."

This is what Malacañang announced today, April 19, 2022.

According to Communications Secretary and Acting Presidential Spokesperson Martin Andanar in the online Palace press briefing, "There has to be a Congressional action to repeal Republic Act [RA] No. 6639 which renamed MIA to NAIA."

On November 17, 1987, RA No. 6639 was called the MIA's Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Malacañang's statement follows a submission by Duterte Youth Representative Ducielle Cardema on April 11 of House Bill 10822, aimed at restoring the NAIA's name to the MIA.

This is to make it easier for travelers to access the country's international gateway, and give Filipinos a "sense of national pride."

Ani Cardema, "Common sense dictates that it is easier for foreigners and tourists who travel across the world, to locate our country and our international gateway if it is named after our country’s capital, and it gives a sense of national pride for the millions of Filipinos to call it again as the Manila International Airport."

He added that it was a "self-serving and highly-politicized act" to follow the name of former senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., wife of former President Corazon Aquino, who was murdered on August 21, 1983.

Andanar added that by 2020 the Supreme Court (SC) had denied a petition to revoke RA 6639.

The petition was submitted by senatorial candidate Larry Gadon, and was slammed by the UK as "for lack of merit."
