The Sims 4 is a 2014 social simulation game developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts. It is the fourth major title in The Sims series, and is the sequel to The Sims 3 (2009). Like previous titles in the series, The Sims 4 allows players to create and dress characters called "Sims", build and furnish houses for "Sims", and simulate their everyday lives. The game introduces a newly-developed custom game engine, with improved character creation and house-building tools, as well as deeper in-game simulation with the new emotion and personality systems for Sims.
The Sims 4 has received many ρáíd downloadable content packs since its release, including twelve expansion packs, twelve "game packs", and several "stuff packs" and "kits". The most recent expansion pack is The Sims 4: High School Years, released on July 28, 2022. Additionally, many free updates have been released throughout the game's lifespan that include major features and additions to the game, such as swimming pools, character customization options, terrain manipulation tools, and gameplay scenarios.
Development of The Sims 4 began as an online multiplayer title, but plans were shifted to a single-player experience after the negative launch reception of Maxis' SimCity in 2013. In the months leading up to the game's release, Maxis revealed that several features present in prior The Sims main titles would be omitted at launch, citing insufficient development time and complexity; this was received negatively by players. Upon its release, the game received mixed reviews from critics, criticizing the lack of content, frequent loading screens, and missing features, but praising the game's visual design, improved AI simulation for Sims, and the easier-to-use house-building interface.
The Sims 4 was announced on May 6, 2013, and released in North America on September 2, 2014 for Microsoft Windows; the game was ported to macOS in February 2015, and later PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November 2017. It has received 36 million players worldwide as of 2021. The game will go free-to-play in October 2022.
