GLOBE EMBARKS ON AGGRESSIVE CELL SITE BUILDING, THIRD TELCO DITO TELECOM FAILS TO DELIVER ON PROMISED JULY 8 TECHNICAL LAUNCH

With the new normal involving increasing reliance on digital solutions, internet connectivity in the country has become an ever more important aspect of Filipinos’ daily lives. To date, two telecom giants are in competition for the more than 30million mobile users in the country.

Ayala-led telecom giant Globe Telecom has recently announced its plans to build more cell towers starting July, which is expected to amp up their services and connectivity capabilities. Earlier, the company has announced it has earmarked P63billion for capital expenditure investments which have not been slashed or decreased despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

As Globe Telecom continues to improve and invest in its infrastructure development, third telco company Dito Telecom recently made pronouncements that there will be delays to its scheduled July 8 technical launch. In a Senate hearing last July 1, Dito Telecom Chief Administrative Officer Adel Tamano said that they have only completed less than a third of the required number of cell sites which is part of their first year commitment to the Philippine government. Of the 1,300 cell sites that Dito Telecom is supposed to build before its technical launch, only 300 cell sites are operational.

The Dennis Uy-backed telecom company is off to a bad start, expected to miss its deadline indicated in their license from the government, and as such, will cause further delay in the government-mandated audit of DITO’s commitment.

DITO Telecom won the 2018 government-led bidding exercise to allow another telco player in the market. In its bid reference, the company will only be given two grace periods of six months each within their 5-year commitment. Should DITO exceed these grace periods and still fail to meet its commitments, the national government can seize its P27.5 billion performance bond, as well as recall the assigned radio frequencies.
