PLDT ties up with Huawei to roll out 5G by 2020

Posted on February 15, 2017

THE PLDT Group is partnering with Chinese electronics giant Huawei for research and development on fifth-generation (5G) wireless broadband, as it lays the groundwork for the rollout of the next-generation technology in the country by 2020.

In a statement on Tuesday, the telecommunications giant said PLDT and Smart Communications, Inc. Chairman, President and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Huawei Technologies Philippines CEO Jacky Gao Kexin during a Jan. 13 visit to the Huawei headquarters in Shenzen, China.

“Under the MoU, PLDT and Smart will work with Huawei to shape the strategic and commercial development of the 5G ecosystem in the Philippines,” PLDT said, referring to 5G which promises lightning fast Internet connectivity.

PLDT and Huawei will work to “identify and develop the areas of technological innovation needed to deliver 5G, which is expected to provide the foundation for the digital connected society.” The plans include establishing a 5G innovation laboratory and a showcase network.

At present, 5G technology is still in development. South Korea has publicly announced its goal to demonstrate the first commercial 5G services when Pyeongchang hosts the Winter Olympics in February 2018.

PLDT and Smart Chief Corporate Services Officer Ray C. Espinosa said the Huawei partnership is an important part the company’s efforts to bring the latest technologies in the country.

“It will enable us to best serve our customers and help boost the country’s development in a world that is rapidly turning digital,” Mr. Espinosa was quoted as saying in the statement.

For his part, Shawn Longyuxiang, director of Huawei Philippines’ PLDT group account, said the partnership will “help develop innovations needed to deliver 5G.”

Late last year, Smart and Huawei successfully combined five frequencies through Carrier Aggregation (CA), a capability of Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) -- also known as 4.5G -- to achieve data speeds of 1.4 gibabit per second (Gbps) by combining two or more radio frequency bands to deliver bigger bandwidth and faster data speeds to mobile users.

“With these breakthroughs, we successfully demonstrated that very high speeds demanded by the advent of the ‘Gigabit Society’ can be supported using LTE technology, and with the spectrum available to PLDT and Smart,” Mr. Espinosa said.

PLDT said its wireless unit is working to offer the benefits of 5G technology to the public as soon as it is available.

“We are focused on ensuring that our current investments in network facilities will enable us to be ready with the necessary infrastructure foundation for 5G when it arrives sometime in 2020,” said Joachim Horn, chief technology and information advisor for PLDT and Smart.

Smart is currently in the middle of a multi-year, multi-million dollar nationwide network expansion program to improve both coverage and quality of service, particularly its 4G LTE service. A major leg of this network expansion was recently completed in Metro Davao, where Smart users are already reporting much improved mobile data experience.

The rollout, PLDT said, is currently underway in Metro Manila and in Metro Cebu, and is expected to significantly boost Smart’s voice, SMS, and mobile data services, specially its indoor LTE coverage, in these urban centers.

An upgrade of PLDT’s fixed access networks, part of the company’s transformation toward 5G-readiness, is also underway, the telco giant said.

“Initial tests done by Smart have found that the ongoing network rollout in and around Metro Manila has begun to pay off, with tests in Rizal province showing LTE download speeds of up to 18 megabits per second (Mbps), while tests in selected indoor and outdoor areas in Cebu have also generated download speeds in excess of 20 Mbps,” it added.

PLDT said these already marked improvements from recently released findings of J.P. Morgan Securities’ Asia Network Quality Report for the last quarter of 2016, which found that average LTE download speeds in the country rose to 8.24 Mbps in the last quarter of 2016, from the 7.27 Mbps national LTE average posted in the third quarter, “boosted by major network investments undertaken by telco operators in the past year.”

The same report noted that among Philippine carriers, Smart posted the highest overall LTE download speeds at 9.17 Mbps. The report, which cited crowd-sourced data gathered by wireless coverage research firm Open Signal, also found Smart leading in NCR for 3G, with download speeds of 2.85 Mbps. -- Imee Charlee C.
