Scientists create a new element. With an atomic weight of 269, it is the heaviest known element. Darmstadtium is a synthetic chemical element with the symbol Ds and atomic number 110. It is an extremely radioactive synthetic element. The most stable known isotope, darmstadtium-281, has a half-life of approximately 12.7 seconds. Darmstadtium was first created in 1994 by the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research near the city of Darmstadt, Germany, after which it was named.

The Human Fish
Charles Zimmy (Charles Zibelman)
Died November 9, 1952 b. 1893
American legless swimmer. Known as "The Human Fish." In 1937, he swam from Albany to NYC, a distance of 150 miles (241 km). He lost his legs at age nine in an accident and his legless body provided enough buoyancy to float while sleeping.
