Because children are indoctrinated into religion by their parents and the society they were brought up in, from a very young age when they are clueless, fragile and gullible.
Ever wondered why the church says children are the most important or why they are against homosexuality, abortion and birth control?
It is most probably and logically because they will have fewer children to indoctrinate and they know that without the indoctrination of gullible children into belief their business would probably no longer exist.

In my very humble opinion 2 main reasons:
Religion and culture is part of the school system and education rules.
Children who may avoid the mainstream of the religious connection will be left out and even bullied into joining in.
